What receptionists say

Priya Patel
Priya Patel Lead Receptionist, Birmingham
The complaints section changed how I handle upset patients. I feel far more confident staying calm and knowing the procedure.

Laura Bell Dental Receptionist, Milton Keynes
I started at the practice with zero dental knowledge. After this I could book the right appointments, explain NHS bands and actually understand what the dentists were asking for.

The telephone scripts alone were worth it — our new-patient bookings went up within a month of the whole reception team completing it.

Questions

Dental Receptionist FAQs

Still unsure which course to start with? Tell us about your role and we'll recommend a path.

Ask our team
Is this suitable if I have never worked in dentistry?

Yes. The Foundation Course (Level 2) and the free taster assume no dental knowledge. You will learn terminology, charting basics, NHS bands and the diary from scratch, in the order a new starter needs them.

Do receptionists need CPD?

Receptionists are not GDC registrants, so CPD is not a legal requirement — but CQC expects evidence of training in safeguarding, complaints, information governance and infection control for everyone in the practice. Our certificates give you that evidence and a recognised record of professional development.

What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3?

Level 2 (Foundation) covers the day-to-day job to a confident standard. Level 3 (Advanced) is for experienced receptionists who lead a desk: KPIs, coaching, complaints escalation, new-patient conversion and working with the practice manager.

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Every track starts with a free taster and a foundation course written for people in their first weeks in the role. Advanced courses assume you have completed the foundation level or have equivalent experience.

How long do I have to complete a course?

There is no deadline — access is for life. Most learners finish a foundation course in two to three weeks studying an hour or two a week, and a CPD module in a single sitting.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Every course issues a downloadable certificate listing the aims, learning outcomes, GDC development outcomes and verifiable CPD hours. Practices use them for CQC training evidence and appraisals.
